Feb 12, 2009 I use Avast and hardly ever do a scan with it as it is always running in the background. If it finds anything it always tells me so that I can deal with it. I agree that when I do a scan, (very rarely I must say), it is very slow, but you can minimise it and do what you want while it is scanning.

Please run a Full Disk Check on your system drive. If needed here are some links on how to run a Disk Check.
